IBS  (Irritable bowel syndrome)

Don’t suffer silently

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is the name given by doctors to a collection of unexplained symptoms affecting the large bowel. They include stomach cramps, abdominal pain, diarrhoea / constipation, bloated stomach, excessive wind, and an urgent need for the toilet. Although X-rays, blood tests and other diagnostics tests reveal no abnormality, IBS can result in debilitating and chronic symptoms which drastically reduce the quality of life. Gut specific hypnotherapy was developed to alleviate these IBS symptoms effectively by enhancing your own body’s healing power.

Some facts about IBS

Actually between 5 and 8 million people in the UK suffer from IBS and many can find no treatment that brings relief. Although the condition is often regarded as minor, the symptoms - including diarrhoea, pain and bloating - can seriously affect quality of life.

Medically IBS is known by a variety of other terms: spastic colon, spastic colitis, mucous colitis and nervous or functional bowel.  Usually, it is a  disorder of the large intestine (colon), although other parts of the intestinal tract, even up to the stomach, can be affected. The colon, the last five feet of the intestine, serves two functions in the body. Firstly, it  dehydrates and stores the stool so that, normally, a well-formed soft stool occurs. Secondly, it quietly propels the stool from the right side over to the  rectum, storing it there until it can be evacuated. This movement occurs by rhythmic contractions of the colon.

When IBS occurs, the colon does not contract normally. instead, it seems to contract in a disorganised, at times violent, manner. The contractions may be terribly exaggerated and sustained, lasting for prolonged periods of time. One area of the colon may contract with no regard to another.  At other times, there may be little bowel activity at all.  These abnormal contractions result in changing bowel patterns with constipation being most common, but sufferers may also experience diarrhoea

A second major feature of IBS is abdominal discomfort or pain. This may move around the abdomen or remain localised, and these localised areas can remain contracted for a prolonged period.  Gas may accumulate behind these localised contractions causing the bowel to swell, so bloating and abdominal stress may occur.

What is Gut-specific Hypnotherapy?

By tapping into the subconscious mind Gut-specific Hypnotherapy enhances the body’s healing power and reduces gut sensitivity. The techniques are used to change the way the brain modulates gut activity, and as a result successfully alleviate IBS symptoms. At Manchester University Hospital Professor Peter Whorwell has been treating IBS patients with hypnotherapy for 20 years.  His study indicates that well-structured hypnotherapy can be very effective in reducing IBS symptoms for about 80 percent of the cases.

Gut-specific Hypnotherapy was pioneered by Michael Mahoney, an internationally renowned clinical hypnotherapist for the treatment of IBS.  James was trained with Michael Mahoney directly and certified to practice the proven Gut-specific Hypnotherapy techniques.

If you are one of those many people who suffer from IBS, why don’t you contact James today for a free 30 minute  consultation?

Please have your symptoms diagnosed by a medical practitioner.

It is not an alternative to seeking proper medical care. Hypnosis is a COMPLEMENTARY therapy  and should, where needed be used in partnership with conventional medicine. Your GP or Doctor's training in diagnosis cannot be replaced by the hypnotist. Check  out all health problems first with your doctor
